Mill, a take on acoustic lighting
Mill, a take on acoustic lighting
Mill is a range of acoustic lighting fixtures available in various heights that effectively absorb sound. Each fixture is adorned with 15 laser-cut panels designed to optimize material management. Its cylindrical shape lends a dynamic character, breathing new life into the spaces they occupy. I was the principal industrial designer for this project from initial sketches to final production. Since a successful product is never created alone, I was fortunate to collaborate with a talented team, including the lead designer, design director, and electrical engineer who created custom PCBs.

Starting point
Many modern reception areas and workplaces feature high ceilings and open spaces, which raises concerns about managing acoustics. While there are various acoustic solutions available, few are aesthetically pleasing. Mill offers an elegant approach by integrating lighting with acoustic design. Constructed like a drum, Mill is composed of 15 laser-cut felt panels that effectively absorb and bounce sound, providing both functionality and style.

In our quest to explore acoustic treatment while seeking an economical and eco-friendly solution, we began with several brainstorming sessions as a team, which I later continued individually. During this time, we utilized the parts and materials we had in stock to quickly model and test mechanical assemblies. This approach enabled us to progress rapidly to 3D iterations, allowing us to reuse as many components as possible that we had previously developed for other products. Additionally, we conducted software tests to evaluate both the direct and indirect lighting capabilities of the luminaire.
